The Handcraft Cooperative called FUTURARTE was created in 2004 by the Ramacrisna's Social Institution, sponsored by Petrobrás. The goal was to include young people from the community who were linving in social and personal risk and came to the Futurarte when there was no future prospects.

During the implanting process, besides being trained through workshops, young people were also skilled in marketing and management techniques. These techniques were sponsored by SEBRAE, Centro Cape and the Banco do Brazil Foundation. It was a way to teach the team how to build and manage the FUTURARTE. In 2006, during the second year of the project, the Ramacrisna opened, also with the sponsorship of Petrobrás, a headquarter for the Cooperative, and expanded the action to the care of women-mothers who live in the region. With the entry of women into the project, the diversity of products was expanded by creating pieces such as purses. These objects use prior knowledge from the new members in techniques like cutting, sewing and crochet merged to the techniques of basketry and weaving which were already worked by the group.

In June 2007 a purse created by a craftsman from FUTURARTE was awarded in the design contest called FORM 2007. It is from the Tendence Lifestyle Fair 2007, which was held in Frankfurt, Germany. The winning purse - in wallet format, made of newspaper and chita fabric - was chosen by the jury for attending the requirements as an innovative solution for creation, products' appropriate treatment, functionality and compelling design. The purse was chosen out of 117 competitors from 16 countries. The FUTURARTE participated in the Globalized Solidarity Project for six years, in partnership with Liverpool Hope University, which aims to build a world of greater solidarity. Thus every year, students and university professors come to Brazil to exchange information and techniques of fashion design. The Ramacrisna is the only institution in the Portuguese language in the world which participates in the project. In 2009, the Cooperative Futurarte was selected along the hundred best handicraft production units in the country by Sebrae, on the Sebrae Top 100 Award's Cerimony. The award grants Futurarte the authorization to use the label 'Sebrae Top 100 Award - 2nd Edition', plus a rewarding certificate and the release of three products at the Nacional Sebrae website and at the Sebrae Regional websites, the promotional CD and award catalog. In 2008, the Futurarte received the Seal of Quality IQS (Quality Sustainable Institute) that certifies the quality of their product, providing the sales increase, participation in business roundtables, fairs and recognition through won awards. it was created to guarantee national and international buyers the quality of the productive chain of the Brazilian handicraft, the PCPA has been working since 2003, with producers who want to reorganize their production under the following guidelines: environmentally responsible, socially fair and economically viable. The Seal of Quality IQS was renewed in 2009 to be used in 2010. The Cooperative works in the weaving, basketry, pottery and fabric industry.
